Choosing between a catamaran and a monohull is one of the most important early decisions in any custom yacht project. Both can be beautiful, both can be luxurious — but they offer very different experiences on the water. Here is how to think about the choice from a designer’s perspective.
The fundamental difference
A monohull has a single hull and a keel; it sits deeper, heels under sail and has a classic, purposeful feel. A catamaran rides on two hulls with a wide bridgedeck between them, giving enormous living space, stability and shallow draft. Neither is “better” — they simply suit different priorities.
Space and comfort
This is where catamarans shine. The twin-hull geometry creates a vast, open main deck and a bright, level saloon that flows seamlessly to the cockpit. For owners who entertain, travel with family, or want a floating home that feels like a waterfront villa, the volume is hard to beat. A monohull feels more intimate and traditionally nautical, with cabins arranged along a narrower, deeper hull.
Stability and motion
Catamarans stay flat — they don’t heel, which many guests find more comfortable and less intimidating. Monohulls heel and have a more rolling, dynamic motion that sailors often love. At anchor, the catamaran’s stability is a genuine luxury.
Performance and handling
Monohulls point higher into the wind and have a timeless sailing character. Modern performance catamarans are fast and efficient, especially off the wind, and their shallow draft opens up anchorages a deep-keeled yacht cannot reach. Docking a wide catamaran needs more planning; a monohull is narrower and simpler in a tight marina.

From a styling standpoint, each platform is a different canvas. A monohull invites elegant, sweeping lines and a sculpted sheer. A catamaran is an exercise in mastering large volumes gracefully — keeping a big, practical vessel looking light, refined and unmistakably designed rather than merely functional.
